Media Psychology: Insight Beyond Numbers
Technologies change. The things that drive people don’t. We live in a world rich with data–everyone has measures of “what” people are doing. That’s great if you want to make decisions for what people did, not what they will do. Media psychology delivers the “why.” It translates numbers into human narratives so you can anticipate behavior no matter what new technology or media content is on the horizon.
Design, technology development and messaging are all fundamentally about people–created by them and used by them–no matter what the purpose. Psychology provides insights from why and what people use to the impact it has, whether you’re creating commercial projects, designing immersive environments, challenging social narratives or advocating for change.
Dr. Rutledge consults with companies on a variety of media projects using media psychology to translate data into human behavior for powerful results.
Recent projects include:
- Audience profiling for entertainment properties and targeted marketing
- Consumer narratives
- Persona development for entertainment programming
- Understanding and managing technology use
- Disrupting political narratives in the social space
- Positive Media Psychology: Using positive psychology to make better media
What is media psychology?
Psychology is the science behind the use, design and impact media and technology have on individuals and society. Dr. Rutledge looks at what we can see (emotion and behavior) and identifies what we can’t see (neurocognition and instinct) so her clients can make better strategic decisions about content, design, development, and distribution. Her model deconstructs human experience into three main areas: instinctive needs, conscious goals, and neurocognition. Want to know more? Send your questions using the contact page.
