Every Cyberchat with Diana Graber of CyberWise.org, we “expose” the psychology behind digital literacy. All of our tips and advice every month are based on psychological theory and science.
Teaching youth how to stay safe online is important, but it is not nearly enough. Online life is complex and the list of topics kids should know about and understand includes everything from misinformation, disinformation, sexting, cyberbullying, deep fakes, stereotypes, plagiarism, web search, personal information, copyright, and much more. Digital literacy IS today’s literacy and kids unequipped with it are woefully unprepared for digital life. Kids can learn digital literacy to be successful at all ages.
June CyberChat: Topic & Guests
On June 14, we are joined by CJ Lindsey and Dino Ambrosi. Special guest Dino Ambresi is a self-described ex-social media addict with a mission to help others build healthy relationships with their devices. He developed a digital literacy course for University of California at Berkeley. Diana Graber, the founder of Cyber Civics, designed an award-winning middle school digital literacy curriculum. The roots of digital literacy are in Media Psychology. At Fielding Graduate University, we offer an MA and PhD in media psychology that develops expertise in the theory and impact of media behaviors to encourage healthy media use and the development of positive media content. CJ Lindsey has led digital strategies for DC Comics, Cartoon Network, Sesame Street, Harry Potter, and others, and is looking at the foundational digital literacy skills young kids are gleaning from their favorite programs.
